Wolof is a language spoken in the Senegambia region of West Africa by the Wolof people. It is also spoke to an extent in other countries such as Mauritania, Guinea, Guinea-Bisaau and Mali.

Interestingly, unlike many other African languages, Wolof is not tonal making it slightly easier to learn. The extent of the use of Wolof is seen in the fact that while the Wolof make up only 40% of Senegal, it is spoken by over 80% of the people as a first, second or third language.

The use of the language is so encouraged that even the smallest effort to speak Wolof instead of colonial French is seen as an olive branch of sorts and can warm the people up to visitors.
